Oh Man...

Video on Flickr!! At last! I am really excited. I have been uploading videos to Vimeo for about a year or so but I would so much rather have everything all in one place. Except I am not so sure about going and switching all the old ones to flickr now - I guess I will save that task for a rainy weekend. Anyway. I am definately still learning what makes an interesting clip (eg: short!!), but I think I am getting a little bit better. I think somewhere they describe video as being a kind of a "longer moment" than just a photo and I really like that idea. Here are the first ones I have put on flickr...

Decorative Papers & Fabrics: An Awesome Book

(..more photos of the book here...)

I took out this book a million years ago at the Brooklyn Public Library and I have been sitting on these photos for almost a year waiting to post about them. I really like these simple at-home techniques for making printed paper or fabrics.

They show in the book how to make patterns with a baking powder (I think) and vinegar (I think) solution, using potato prints (awesome!!), by dipping the corners of a folded piece of paper or fabric into dye, and wax resist techniques. The last photo was done with resist and bent jewellery wire. There were also several pages on how to make marbled paper, which is something I would really love to try - but I think that one is a little complicated. Anyway. Hopefully one day I will have the chance to try out a few of these tricks! I love the colour page examples they had. I think the results are really beautiful.

---PS. Here is a blog from Tokyo that posts spreads of art, design and architecture books (and there are links underneath with more info on the subjects)...via Print Fetish---

I Made These Cards the Other Day But I Could Not Get A Good Picture of Them...Bummer.

(...a couple of details here and here...)

My annoying camera. I couldn't get a shot on the kitchen table - in the daylight - like I wanted to because my camera would just blow it out - like here - so I was forced to try to take them in a dark, dank corner of our not-so-great kitchen floor. Sheesh. Oh well. I thought I might as well show them anyway. I am going to try to take a better photo at some point - promise.

I have given away two of these already. I added in a second color which I am still hemming and hawing about whether I like better or not...I might leave the rest just one color maybe...I am going to shoot for another 5, just enough to have a proper set. I think they are pretty cute! That top one is my favorite. They are really fun to do too - I haven't realized how much I missed drawing. It is nice to have the time to get back to get into it again...I am considering these little projects as just a warm-up and then see if I can tackle some real, bigger drawings, maybe on some nice print-making paper or something so I can use the watercolors when I want...anyway - ideas, ideas...

Grey Day

Today the sky is grey. I am going to use it as a good reason to stay inside and get some serious work done. No more messing around! But first - a walk and a coffee...

Yesterday I was on the internet for way way to long but I did find some good and interesting things out there:

...someone else's Past Present and Future...
...I really like the design on these totebags - so loose and confident!...
...the original film Le Ballon Rouge and the new version by Hsiao-hsien Hou
which I want to see...
...Agnes Montgomery who designed the covers for Panda Bear's amazing albums via Scout Holiday...
...Faces of Paris - Brigitte Bardot: part 1 and part 2...
..these two posts on HI + LOW - here and here...

Okay - time for some fresh air...

bye!

Amanda Ross-Ho

Robin reminded me of the artist Amanda Ross-Ho shortly after I read an article about her in Modern Painters magazine. It is bascially impossible for me to not like this work as it is very feminine yet tom-boyish and includes a bunch of my favorite ideas - oversized objects, beautiful lace/lattice work patterns, snowflake cut-outs, the mundane and the beautiful hand-in-hand, unpretentious materials and presentation and I even found a piece with a giant xerox of fruit baskets which is so strange because I just wrote that down in my notebook yesterday as something I would like to try to make casts out of, or make some drawings of...weird.

Here are a bunch of links if you would like to investigate further:

...Here on the Saatchi Gallery website...
...Here at the 2008 Whitney Biennial...
...Here at the Cherry and Martin gallery...
...Here at Western Exhibitions...
...and here on the Art MoCo blog...

Hope you have a nice lazy Sunday. I wish it was as beautiful as yesterday...oh well - spring is always so up and down...!

Two Very Cool Memphis Invitations and Some Logos...

When we visited the Rohsska Museet in Goteborg I came across this Memphis piece on display in their permanent collection and it reminded me of this post I did a while back. I really love the top two invitations to the first and third exhibtions of Memphis Design. I love the idea of just taking a random photo or image and making a statement out of that. (Here is an article on designboom about the design cooperative and here is a link talking about Ettore Sottsass one of the original members...) (alright, alright - and one more here about the return of Memphis style and the wiki - no more!!)
