ELizabeth Peyton

I went to see Elizabeth Peyton at the New Museum last weekend. What a great show! I love how her portraits are so intimate and full of emotion. What was also interesting was how her subjects seem to be victim of some sort of reverse "male gaze" - she has rendered all her boys as semi-erotic ruby-lipped beauties. This perspective is not unusual in a place like BUTT Magazine of course, but is quite rare coming from a female artist. I thought it was very refreshing. You really do just want to take one of these pretty birds home.
