Spooked

I can't really think of a Halloween-appropriate post so instead I will just link to these great photos of the artist David Altmejd's studio. And here are some photos I took of his exhibition this spring at Andrea Rosen Gallery. And here is an article from W magazine. AND some footage from the opening of the Canadian Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale.

Alright!! That is it before I carried away. Have a spooky one.

Chris Johanson "Totalities"

(...I especially like those collaged chairs for some reason...)

I really liked this exhibition Totalities by the artist Chris Johanson that I saw at Deitch Projects earlier this Fall. Johanson and his partner Jo Jackson are really inspiring for me. Back in this September post I linked to a lecture they gave at the Walker Center. It made me like them even more. One day I will try to do a more elaborate post on them but for now here are some links just about this particular show.

Iggy Pop

I am kind of fascinated with Iggy Pop at the moment. I think it is his incredible amount of raw energy. And aside from a few kind of ummmm....iggy-isms - he is totally articulate and weirdly charming in this documentary. I really believe that he did feel like he had something to give people - even if it wasn't done in the most conventional way. I also like the way he explained that his decision to make music and be a performer was a way to carve out his own future instead of falling into the the middle-class trap that the American Dream had set up for him. Not many people are so aware of their own fishbowl...

ELizabeth Peyton

I went to see Elizabeth Peyton at the New Museum last weekend. What a great show! I love how her portraits are so intimate and full of emotion. What was also interesting was how her subjects seem to be victim of some sort of reverse "male gaze" - she has rendered all her boys as semi-erotic ruby-lipped beauties. This perspective is not unusual in a place like BUTT Magazine of course, but is quite rare coming from a female artist. I thought it was very refreshing. You really do just want to take one of these pretty birds home.

Mini Movies

I am trying to get better at taking these little movies with my point and shoot camera. It is really hard. There are so many more things to worry about - timing, things entering the frame unexpectedly, sound...it is so hard to balance everything so it works. But fun! The sound is the thing that always frustrates me the most. I wish I could mess around with it a bit - like add in music or just take it out but whenever I do things like that with imovie I have to compress it and then the quality is really bad. It makes it more of a challenge to get it right the first time I suppose...

There are five million more over here if you are up for it!

Sometimes Things are Crazy

Hello.

I wanted to post but I guess I don't have too much to say. I can't even think of one lousy link. Strange. I am sure it will pass. So here are just a few moody photos for you to meditate on.

Okay - nightie night.

Gilbert & George

Gilbert & George have a huge exhibition on right now at the Brooklyn Museum. I really want to see it - maybe next weekend. After listening to thier interview, I realize just how seriously they take their role as artists. I respect their integrity and I am so glad that they are around and that they have committed their lives to speaking some sort of truth.

...Here is a very funny interview with them at the Brooklyn Museum...
...Here are a zillion images I found of their work online and uploaded to tumblr...
...And here is a good little archive at the White Cube...

Have a great weekend!
